I can't remember the name of this book!?

When i was younger i read a children's/young adult book about a little girl who made things for elves or gnomes, i can't remember which. If i remember correctly the cover of the book had a little girl lying in the grass in a white linen dress and brown boots possibly overlooking little houses or something of that nature. I remember in the book the girl was very poor and they used an open oven to heat their house. also, she always ate oatmeal or grits because she said she had a very sensitive stomach, but one day her friend made her a bologna sandwich and she devoured it. anyone remember this book?
