1999 jeep Grand Cherice tranny transfer cace or rear?

1999 jeep Grand Cherice. My buddy just bought one of these and he said the car maid a rumble noise and went out of gear but when putting into 4 wheel high he mad it home no problem he was told by 1 mech the tranny was bad and by another the transfer cace was bad he also mentioned the tranny temp light came on Hey I work on Boats not CARS thank you in advance Michael
