What kind of bug is this? (it made our kitty sick)?

That is a female Walking Stick. It looks like one of the North American striped species, possibly Anisomorpha ferruginea, or the Northern Two-Striped Walking Stick. They're also sometimes called "Prairie Gators" in the US. I honestly don't know if these are toxic to pets, but it's very possible.
